Busy Christmas expected at Exeter Airport
December 19, 2012 By Paula Garrett
A busy Christmas period is expected at Exeter Airport with around fifteen thousand people are expected to pass through the airport.
Several flights are departing on Saturday to airports in the Alps for winter sports enthusiasts and although bookings to Geneva, Chambery and Salzburg have been filling up since the snowfall, there is still some availability with Flybe, Crystal and Inghams for those who want to spend New Year on the piste.
A flight to Alicante, also with Flybe, departs on Saturday and winter sun seekers are also off on Sunday’s fully booked Thomson aircraft to Lanzarote where the temperatures have recently been 23 degrees.
A handful of seats are available to Gran Canaria on Christmas Eve and to Tenerife on 25 December with passengers scheduled to arrive in time for Christmas lunch. Many of this Thursday’s passengers to Sharm el Sheikh will stay for two weeks and see in 2013 alongside the Red Sea but there are still some seats on the 27 December flight for those who wish to join them.
Matt Roach, Exeter Airport’s managing director said: “This is a very busy week for the airport. As well as the winter sun and ski routes we are gearing up for passengers on the domestic flights travelling both from and into the region.
“There is a huge increase in the family and friends market at this time of the year on services to Scotland, Newcastle, Norwich and Manchester.
“Also with the continuing development of Flybe’s Manchester hub there is an ever growing range of exotic destinations available to passengers travelling from Exeter, not just over the Christmas period but into the New Year as well.”
Flybe hosts Manchester Santa flight
December 19, 2012 By Paula Garrett

Flybe gave a group of children from the Young Oncology Unit of the Christie NHS Trust and their families an early Christmas treat with a festive flight accompanied by comedian Jason Manford and Olympic gold medal winner Etienne Stott both of whom hail from Manchester. The excited group was entertained by local magician, Derrick Beckford before boarding Flybe’s Embraer 175 jet BE8888 plane for a 40-minute flight around Manchester and the local environs during which time the aircraft met up with Santa who came on board to hand out gifts to each child.
Etienne Stott and Jason Manford chatted to the children and their families and posed for photographs. Etienne also presented each child with their very own ‘Flybe Santa flight’ gold medal as a keepsake of the memorable trip.
Flybe’s Director of Marketing, Simon Lilley said: “We would like to thank everyone who has pulled together so magnificently to support and make this flight possible for this very deserving group of brave young people. Supporting the local communities in which we operate is a key priority for Flybe and every year we really enjoy the privilege of sharing some Christmas cheer with such special people – we hope they had as much fun as we did.”
Jason Manford commented: “I’m used to performing for hundreds of people but today felt particularly special, seeing so many children smile and hearing their laughter. There were some real jokers on the flight who certainly kept me on my toes!”
Added Etienne Stott: “The flight was an excellent pre Christmas treat and I enjoyed sharing my Olympic memories with the children. It was particularly rewarding to be able to provide them all with their very own gold medals, as they have all shown so much bravery and courage.”
Penelope Hart-Spencer from the Christie NHS Foundation Trust’s Young Oncology Centre said: “These children have to endure prolonged and harsh treatment, which disrupts the whole of their family life. To be able to give them a treat like this flight is fantastic and helps not just the children and families, but also enables the staff caring for the children to share the special experience with them.”
Flybe’s 2012 Santa Flight from Manchester Airport reflects similar flights the airline has undertaken in previous years for children from Inverness, Jersey, Southampton and Exeter.

AOA responds to IoD’s ‘Flying into the future’ report
December 19, 2012 By Paula Garrett
The Airport Operators Association (AOA) has responded to the publication of the Institute of Directors (IoD) latest report ‘Infrastructure for Business: Flying into the Future’.
The report states that current levels of Air Passenger Duty (APD), which were increased yet again by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his recent Autumn Statement, are “much too high” and could be costing the UK economy up to £12 billion a year.
Darren Caplan, Chief Executive of the AOA, said: “This report adds further weight to the ever-growing argument that Air Passenger Duty in the UK is far too high, and is doing lasting damage to the country’s economic prospects. The Airport Operators Association has been calling on the Government to recognise what airports, airlines, the travel industry, business leaders and more than 300,000 people who have contacted the Chancellor of the Exchequer and their local MPs about this issue have been telling them for a long time.
“APD is actively hurting the UK airports sector, and costing the country in terms of connectivity, passenger numbers and inward investment. We strongly urge the Government to put an end to the punitive rises in APD and commit to carrying out an independent economic impact assessment into the true cost of APD on the whole of the UK economy.”

We would like to thank MCAP for their support and confidence in Wizz Air.”
Aeromexico celebrates launch of new Heathrow flights
December 18, 2012 By Paula Garrett
Aeromexico launched its first flight between Heathrow and Mexico City (MEX) on Saturday, 15 December.
The airline, which had to wait four years to obtain slots to launch the service, will operate the Heathrow to Mexico City flights three times a week from Terminal 4.
Colin Matthews, Chief Executive Officer of Heathrow said: “We are delighted to welcome Aeromexico to Heathrow. The centre of gravity in the world economy is shifting and Britain should be forging new links with economies like Mexico. But with this single deal taking four years to complete, the UK’s lack of hub airport capacity is causing us to fall further behind the rest of Europe.”
Andres Conesa, Aeromexico´s CEO said: “Our new flight to Heathrow is a great achievement for Aeromexico and represents clear evidence of the development of the Mexican airline industry. We are confident that our operations will have a significant positive effect for both economies and will strength our financial and cultural relationship. We are also glad to announce that the route will operate in 2013 with our first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the newest, best most efficient aircraft ever built”
Heathrow marks pod milestone
December 18, 2012 By Paula Garrett

Heathrow has marked the anniversary of its 500,000th passenger to ride on its transport pods. The day was marked with a visit from Transport Minister, Norman Baker who saw the technology first hand.
Last week, Rt Hon Alan Duncan MP, Minister of State for International Development also hopped on board the pods for the beginning of his UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Ministerial mission to Singapore, and Malaysia. Alan promoted the UK’s expertise in Smart Cities technology, using this to solve problems relating to urban living – the pods are a shining example of this.
Designed by British company Ultra Global PRT, the 21 battery powered, driverless, zero emission vehicles are designed to eliminate more than 50,000 bus journeys on Heathrow’s roads each year between the Terminal 5 Business Car Park and the main terminal. They transport around 30,000 passengers every month and the innovative technology has sparked both local and global interest.
Ultra – which is 75 per cent owned by Heathrow –has signed a commercial deal with a company in India to deliver a system 10 times the size of Heathrow’s in the northern city of Amritsar. The system has also been endorsed by the transport industry winning prestigious awards including top prize at the British Parking Awards for transport innovation, as well as a London Transport Award for Most Innovative Transport Project. Most recently the pods have been announced as the winner of the Most Innovative Service at the Best in Britain awards of The Great Exhibition 2012.
Norman Baker said, “It is good to see how these pods are cutting congestion – and carbon – at Heathrow. They have been well-received by those using the airport and the system has the potential to be equally useful elsewhere in the UK and in other parts of the world.”
Fraser Brown Ultra Managing Director at Heathrow said, ‘It was great to meet with both Ministers and show them the pod system. We are proud to celebrate an incredibly successful first 18 months of operation and we are pleased that the technology is of interest to a wide range of potential partners worldwide.’
Rt Hon Alan Duncan MP said of his first ever ride on a pod, ‘This is British engineering, design and execution at its best. This is a revolutionary, environmentally friendly transport system that’s easy and cost effective to install, pollution free and extremely fun to use. It highlights the UK’s and Ultra Global’s ability in designing a world first and world beating new form of transport, moving large numbers of travellers, to exactly where and when they want to go.’
Leeds Airport £11 million pound terminal investment officially opened
December 17, 2012 By Paula Garrett

The Rt. Hon William Hague MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs officially opened Leeds Bradford Airport’s (LBA) £11 million passenger terminal development last Friday, 14 December, 2012.
The development, which was backed by the airport’s private equity owners Bridgepoint, delivers on its commitment to create ‘best in class’ facilities at Leeds Bradford, Yorkshire’s gateway airport.
Prior to the official ceremony Mr Hague toured the impressive new facilities with Leeds Bradford Airport’s Chief Executive, John Parkin and the airport’s Commercial Director, Tony Hallwood.
Construction work to improve the passenger experience commenced in December 2011. The completed terminal investment now provides for a 65% increase in airside space over two floors, creating a new larger departure lounge, a range of new food and beverage units, a major walk-through Tax and Duty Free store and additional retail brands. This development has created an additional 2500sqm of airside space of which 600sqm is new construction. The security search zone has also been increased by approximately 250sqm, equivalent to a 40% increase in area.
The Yorkshire Premier Lounge has also been extended to provide both a business and leisure product. Passengers may now choose two separate areas: an exclusive business zone and family friendly leisure lounge. Both have been designed to cater for the specific needs of these departing passengers with a 90% increase in floor space allowing 171 guests to start their journey in style. Both lounges offer similar facilities, including, complimentary refreshments, satellite TV and the latest magazines, newspapers and wi-fi.
Following passenger feedback, boarding gate zones have also been extended and a covered walkway constructed from the terminal to a number of aircraft stands now provides all weather cover.
The Rt. Hon William Hague MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, commented: “Regional airports can make a vital contribution to local and regional economies and Leeds Bradford is an excellent example of that, providing over £100m of value [Gross Value Added] to the City Region, a figure set to grow by 10% with the introduction of the new British Airways services.
“Regional airports also have an important role to play in strengthening the national economy by ensuring that the UK remains one of the best connected countries in the world, so that we can compete successfully for economic opportunities in established and emerging markets.”
Energy sector boosts passenger numbers at HIAL Airports
December 17, 2012 By Paula Garrett
Passenger numbers at Scotland’s regional airports increased by more than 10% last month, with the booming energy sector responsible for much of the growth.
Latest figures from airport operator HIAL show that its 11 airports handled 101,701 passengers in November, an increase of 10.5% on the same month last year.
Sumburgh recorded a 50.6% increase in passenger numbers, the result of a significant increase in offshore oil sector charters and refueling activity, and increased demand across all scheduled services.
Wick John O’Groats reported an increase of 28.7%, also as a result of oil sector charters, and an increase in the number of scheduled passengers travelling on the Edinburgh route.
At Kirkwall, additional flights in the winter schedule to mainland and island destinations resulted in a 16.1% increase in passenger numbers.
At Inverness, passenger numbers grew by 0.9%, with services to Amsterdam, Manchester and Birmingham enjoying the strongest growth, albeit demand was offset by cuts in the winter schedule to Luton and Gatwick.
Dundee enjoyed growth on the London City route and additional charter and business aviation traffic, resulting in a 4.9% increase in passengers. However, the withdrawal of services to Belfast and Birmingham this month is likely to dampen passenger growth in the coming months.
Additional demand for Glasgow services resulted in growth at Campbeltown, Islay and Tiree, where passenger numbers grew by 33.7%, 9.4% and 6.1% respectively. Meanwhile, Barra recorded a 22.2% increase in traffic.
At Stornoway and Benbecula, passenger numbers fell by 5.3% and 4.1% respectively.
The number of aircraft movements during the month increased by 19.7%.
In the year to date (April to November), passenger numbers across the group increased by 2.3%.
Inglis Lyon, Managing Director of HIAL, said: “These are especially strong growth figures, particularly given the time of year and prevailing economic climate. The continued growth in oil related traffic is particularly good news for our airports in the North and Northern Isles.
“With increased offshore oil activity in the area planned, we are confident this growth will continue in the coming years and that we can gain a greater share of this lucrative market, due to our ability to respond quickly and flexibly to the needs of the energy sector.”
Manchester to Den Helder flights announced
December 17, 2012 By Paula Garrett
Flybe franchise carrier Loganair has announced the launch of a new weekday service between Manchester Airport and Den Helder (De-Kooy) Airport in the Netherlands.
The flights to Den Helder, which serves as the Netherland’s offshore support hub, will operate on weekdays from 4 March 2013 via Norwich.
Flights will depart Manchester at 8.55am arriving in Den Helder at 12.10pm, local time. A return service will depart Den Helder at 2.30pm, arriving into Manchester via Norwich at 4pm.
The new route is an extension of the popular Manchester to Norwich service, which is flown 3 times every weekday, and once on a Sunday.
Loganair’s chief operating officer Phil Preston said: “We’re extremely happy to be once again extending our international network, launching a route which will be hugely attractive to those working in the oil and gas industries.
“The Manchester – Norwich service has already proven to be very successful and the new link with Den Helder will be an extremely useful service for passengers spread across the UK.”
